You can determine with a phone call what an attorney is going to need from you. First, you should make a very clear but concise note to yourself. Number the note with the issues. This is what you are going to read to an assistant in a law office. You should be able to make your issue clear in only a few lines.
Example:
“I have a lease. Lease still has six months to go. Landlord is trying to increase my rent starting next month and is threatening to evict me if I refuse.”
In this example you will see we did not include names or dates or any tales of woes or “he said she said.” Only the simple facts of the issue.
In the above case, an attorney could quickly see a clear violation of Real Estate law. He or she would then make an appointment for you to come to the office and bring with you, perhaps any letters from the landlord and a copy of your current lease. Bring with you any phone numbers that are part of the case.]
Bring the landlord’s phone number for example. We never want to waste even a few minutes of an attorney’s time looking up a number.
You would be sure to bring only copies of documents. If you are not able to make copies, you would bring the originals and tell the attorney immediately that these are your ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS and that he or she need to make copies for you.
Understand that it is accepted practice for some law offices to charge for copying documents. Some Law offices have very large copying tasks and are themselves charged on their own leased copiers. Be a good client from the beginning of the relationship. Take the time to make copies of anything your “new best friend” needs.
EXAMPLE:
CHANGING NAMES ON A WILL.
If you needed only a will that names your spouse as your sole beneficiary and there are no other changes, you do not need to hire an entire law firm specializing in Estates. A simple office visit can accomplish this task.
